Election Body In Middle Of Examining Complaint Against Pita-Bangkok Post

THAILAND

Thailand's Election Commission (EC) is in the middle of examining a complaint against Move Forward Party (MFP) leader Pita Limjaroenrat over his interest in a media company, a source told the Bangkok Post.

  • The law prohibits anyone holding shares in a media company from running in an election. A rival MP asked the Election Commission to investigate Pita's ownership of shares in iTV and determine if the registration of other MFP candidates could also be declared invalid.
  • The anonymous source told the Bangkok Post that the EC is in a legal limbo, as it can no longer disqualify Pita as a candidate once the election has been concluded. The EC could still try to unseat Pita as a lawmaker by referring his case to the Constitutional Court, but only after he is officially endorsed as an MP.
