Peru's presidential election held on 6 June is still too close to call, with right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori leading with 51.5% of the vote to far-left candidate Pedro Castillo's 48.5% with 79.5% of the vote counted, according to official data.

  • The close nature of the election raises the risk that the losing candidate cries foul in alleging irregularities that could see a protracted legal battle take place, or even destabilising bouts of violence from party supporters should the election be seen as being stolen.
