Electoral Commission Releases Final Election Results

POLAND

Poland's National Electoral Commission released the final results of Poland's parliamentary elections, in which voters cast their ballots to fill the 460 seats in the lower house (Sejm) and the 100 seats of the upper house (Senate). The election had a historic turnout, which beat the previous record set during the first partially free elections in 1989.

  • The ruling Law and Justice (PiS) was confirmed as the front-runner in the Sejm but managed to secure just 194 seats, falling short of the 231 simple majority. This implies that the Civic Coalition (KO), Third Way (TD) and New Left (NL) will form a coalition government.
  • The so-called "Senate Pact" of the Civic Coalition, Third Way, New Left and five independent senators managed to secure a comfortable majority of two-thirds in the upper house. The Senate has a limited role in Poland's political system, which makes the result of the Sejm election much more consequential.
  • President Andrzej Duda hinted that he will give the largest party the first chance to form government. This is expected to merely delay the formation of the new government by a few weeks, given that PiS has a very limited coalition-forming potential, while pro-EU parties have effectively committed to forming a coalition.
