Electorate happy with new Labor government

AUSTRALIA
  • The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that its Resolve Political Monitor is showing a surge in support for the new Labor government of PM Albanese, well beyond what you would expect during the honeymoon period.
  • The results have probably been boosted by the scandals currently surrounding the former PM Morrison, which may have made the electorate feel relieved with the change of government.
  • The survey reports the ALP’s primary vote would now be 42% (up from 32.6%) while the coalition’s has dropped to 28% (from 36%). Support for the independent Teals has risen to 8% (from 5%).
  • Albanese as preferred PM is now 55% to 17% compared with the Coalition’s Dutton.
  • Survey respondents also put the government ahead of the opposition coalition at managing national security and the economy for the first time, and their lead in other areas was extended.
  • These results are likely to give the new government added confidence to follow their centre-left policy agenda, particularly on climate, industrial relations and the labour market.
