Elysee Confirms Macron To Hold Working Dinner w/Saudi's MBS On 28 July

FRANCE

The Elysee Palace has confirmed that French President Emmanuel Macron will host Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Thursday 28 July. The meeting comes after MBS traveled to Greece for a meeting with PM Kyriakos Mistostakis. The trip is MBS' first to the EU since the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Turkey in 2018.

  • This is not the first time that Macron has sought to court the Saudi crown prince, having visited Jeddah in Dec 2021 for a meeting with MBS. This was the first face-to-face between the crown prince and a Western leader since the Khashoggi killing.
  • French gov't has sought to develop closer links with a number of GCC gov'ts in recent weeks and months as concerns mount over Russian energy supply squeezes and its impact on Europe. Earlier this summer, French gov't reached a deal w/ gov't of UAE on diesel supplies. Hope for similar agreements w/Saudi could be in the offing.
