EU

Rym Momatz at Politico tweets comments from an Elysee official denying that France or Germany will seek to block the discussion of the rule of law issue in Poland at tomorrow's European Council summit.

  • "I formally deny a French or German opposition to raising the issue of rule of law in Poland during the European Council... it is a major problem that throws into question the European project. I formally deny, it is not true" per Élysée official. Same Élysée official: "at no point in our discussions with our partners did we oppose raising this issue at the European Council."
  • With some smaller EU member states set to bring up the question of breaches of EU rule of law standards by Poland, there had been speculation that the larger members could seek to dissuade this to keep the summit on the prescribed topics of conversation.
  • Polish gov't has vociferously denied EU accusations of impropriety w/ regard to rule of law or the recent constitutional tribunal ruling on EU legal primacy.
