Energy Council Seeks LNG Expansion

An extraordinary Energy Council meeting in Brussels has just concluded. The meeting was focused on energy security, supply and prices, and proposals for concrete areas for action.

  • French Energy Minister Barbara Pompili briefed reporters saying that 'delegates discussed urgently finding new EU sources of gas from LNG terminals, and discussed measures to reduce consumption.'
  • Bloomberg's Rachel Morrison commented earlier: 'There's enough nominal LNG import and pipeline capacity into Europe but there are bottlenecks: Export capacity in US, Qatar where growth isn't fast enough to enable Europe to use more regas capacity; With stronger LNG demand, competition for upstream supply will be the bottleneck.'
