Energy Ministers Hold Extraordinary Summit On Price Spikes

EUROPEAN COUNCIL

EU energy ministers are holding an extraordinary Energy Council summit in Luxembourg City to discuss rising gas prices across the bloc.

  • Livestream of public session can be found here: https://video.consilium.europa.eu/event/en/25028
  • Initial public session allows ministers to respond to the Commission's proposed 'toolbox' of measures to deal with the rise in energy prices (link to PDF here).
  • Ministers will discuss gas supply in a closed-door session in the afternoon.
  • Last night, eight primarily northern EU member states issued a statement that sought to reject calls for major changes to the EU's electricity market (proposed by southern members). Link to statement here.
  • One of the potential options on the table is developing shared gas reserves or having a joint gas procurement programme run by the Commission. The progress of either of these options would mark a major step towards a broader EU-run energy union.
