ENERGY: What to Watch: US Payrolls, Rig Counts & COT

  • US nonfarm payrolls are due for release at 08:30 ET. Nonfarm payrolls are expected to moderate further in July after the slight beat in June was more than offset by large negative revisions to the prior two months.
  • The latest Baker Hughes rig count data is due for release at 13:00ET.  The US oil rig count last week recovered to 482 from the lowest since December 2021 at 477 the previous week. The gas rig count was last week holding just above the June low at 101.
  • The ICE and Nymex commitments of traders reports are due for release after the close today at 18:30BST and 15:30ET. Money managers reduced net long crude positions again last week to drop from a peak earlier in July. ICE Gasoil net long positioning fell towards the low level from early June while funds maintained a net short Nymex diesel position. Nymex gasoline net longs also fell to the lowest since 2020.
