Envoy Warns Of Escalation, Nuclear Risk In Ukraine On Russia Visit

Wires reporting comments from China's Special Envoy for Eurasian Affairs Li Hui regarding the conflict in Ukraine. Li says that the 'Russian side appreciate China's sincere desire and earnest efforts to promote a peaceful settlement of Ukraine crisis', but warns that 'The risk of escalation of Russian-Ukraine war is still high.' Says that 'As long as [it is] conducive to easing situation, China is willing to do anything'.

  • Li warns of situation around Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, saying that 'All sides must ensure the safety of nuclear facilities and take concrete measures to cool down the situation.'
  • Li says that his Europe trip has 'achieved its intended purpose'. Since May 15, Li has visited Ukraine, Germany, France, Poland, and Russia in an effort to push China's 12-point 'Position on the Political Settlement of the Ukraine Crisis'
  • Katrina Yu at Al Jazeera: "... Li denies reports Beijing asked Kyiv to allow Russia to keep captured territory, calling the claims a “move to sow discord between China and Ukraine.” Hui says the war is in a “stalemate” with “high level of uncertainty”. Though he admits it’s very difficult for all parties to come to the negotiation table, he says neither Kyiv or Moscow have closed the door to the possibility of talks."
