Equities Roundup: Energy, Autos Underperforming

  • Stocks remain under pressure ahead midday, extending session lows as US$ climbs higher (Bbg DXY +.502) amid a combination of position squaring ahead tomorrow's FOMC and month end extension. Trading desks reported a couple large sell programs on the move lower (-1243 kicked it off at 1113ET). Energy and consumer discretionary sectors underperforming. Currently, DJIA is down 330.57 points (-0.86%) at 38056.15, S&P E-Minis down 40.5 points (-0.79%) at 5106.5, Nasdaq down 148.2 points (-0.9%) at 15835.45.
  • Scaling back week opener support, Communication Services and Energy sectors led laggers in the first half: EV maker Tesla -5.33% after gaining 14.27% Monday, Ford -3.41%, GM -2.89% while parts makers Aptiv declined 1.84%, Borg Warner -1.39%. Oil and Gas shares weighed on the Energy sector: Marathon Petroleum -6.0%, Phillips66 -3.4%, Valero -2.90%.
  • Leading gainers: Health Care and Utilities sector shares outperformed in the first half, pharmaceuticals and biotech shares supported the former: after boosting revenue outlook for the year - Eli Lilly gained 4.71%, West Pharmaceutical Services +2.66%, Biogen +0.85%. The Utilities sector was next up with AEP +0.52%, Public Services Enterprises +0.42%.
  • Expected corporate earnings announcements after today's close: Stryker, Prudential Fncl, ONEOK, Boston Properties, Diamondback Energy, Public Storage, Pinterest, Amazon, Starbucks, Advanced Micro Designs.
