Erdogan Drops opposition to Sweden, Finland NATO Bids

  • Late yesterday, Turkey formally endorsed the advancement of Sweden and Finland’s accession to NATO, dropping opposition to the bids which now go to each of the 30 NATO members for ratification. Stoltenberg yesterday stated the countries would be formally invited this week, while the conference continues in Madrid.
  • In response to dropping the opposition to the bids, Erdogan stated that Turkey “got what it wanted” from the two countries, claiming that Turkey has now “made significant gains in the fight against terrorist organisations”.
  • Economic Confidence data this morning Sees a Hit to Consumer Sentiment in June, dropping to 93.6, the lowest sentiment level since May 2021. Consumer confidence slid 6.2% compared to May, manufacturing by 2.2%, services by 1.7% and retail by 2.3%.
  • Erdogan is to meet with US President Biden later today, at 1745CEST.
