Erdogan Officially Announces New Cabinet

  • President Erdogan officially appointed a new vice president and a cabinet to serve until 2028 with the intelligence chief, Hakan Fidan, becoming Turkey’s new foreign minister and economist Mehmet Simsek the country’s new finance and treasury minister. In his first remarks following the appointment, Simsek hinted at a return to conventional policies. “Turkey does not have any choice left other than returning to rational policy making,” he said.
  • Dunya report that Simsek may appoint Hafize Gaye Erkan as governor to the central bank. Erkan was born and raised in Turkey and earned a PhD scholarship to Princeton. After earning her doctorate, she led a team and developed investment algorithms at Goldman Sachs, then went to First Republic in roles including Co-CEO, President and Board Member.
  • Turkey’s new defense minister will be Yasar Guler, the current chief of general staff of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK). Former AKP lawmaker, Yilmaz Tunc will replace Bekir Bozdag as the justice minister while Erdogan chose to appoint Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya as the interior minister.
