Erdogan Refuses To State Opposition To Russian Missile Purchases

TURKEY

President Recep Tayyipd Erdogan, when asked whether Turkey would continue to purchase Russian S-400 missile systems. Says that "It’s rather early to tell you what the future will hold. It will depend on the circumstances... ‘As I mentioned before, we have to protect our friendships both with Mr. Zelensky and Mr. Putin."

  • The Turkish purchase of Russian missiles remains a major security concern for other NATO members given the escalating tensions between Moscow and the West. However, with Turkey having hosted the meeting of Ukrainian and Russian foreign ministers last week, the Erdogan is seeking to lay claim to being the best hope of facilitating a ceasefire agreement between the two sides, and therefore other NATO members are unlikely to offer significant criticism of Erdogan's actions in the short-term.
