Erdogan Says Turkey-EU Relations Need To Improve

In a statement released following a call between President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Dutch PM Mark Rutte, the Turkish president said that the current state of EU-Turkey ties are 'not in the interest of both sides', and that the "narrow-minded and vicious goals of one or two member countries" should be set aside to ensure a mutually beneficial situation.

  • Relations between Ankara and Brussels remain strained due to a number of issues; including Turkey's continued objections to Sweden (and by association Finland) joining NATO, heightened tensions between Turkey and Greece in the eastern Mediterranean, and Turkey's somewhat ambivalent stance on the war in Ukraine (although Anakara's role as a potential mediator could prove crucial in ratcheting down the war eventually).
