Both men hail from the main opposition centre-left Republican People's Party (CHP) and are seen as prime contenders for the CHP nomination to face off against incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the 2023 election.

  • MetroPOLL poll: Politicans net approval: Yavas (CHP): 24, Imamoglu (CHP): 4, Aksener (IYI): -1, Erdogan (AKP): -10, Ozel (CHP): -11, Cercioglu (CHP): -15, Kilicdaroglu (CHP): -26. Fieldwork: 20-26 September 2021. Sample size: 1,638
  • The strong ratings for both CHP mayors points towards a difficult race for Erdogan in the next election should either win the CHP nomination. However, the current head of the CHP, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, stands with a net approval of -26%. Should he emerge as the CHP's candidate, Erdogan may face an easier run to re-election.
