Eskom Calls for 20% Tariff Hike, ANC Concludes Coalition Talks

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Eskom calls for a 20% tariff increase as it battles with energy regulator NERSA for more cost reflective tariffs. NERSA is currently working on Eskom's price increase framework and has made four proposals, but fees may still be hikes 15% - but Eskom has so far rejected all four proposals.
    • 2022 prices remain uncertain, with new tariffs needing to be tabled by 15 March to start 1 July
  • ANC says coalition talks are over, announcing its mayoral candidates but gave no further info on coalitions after its weekend NEC.
    • The ANC is looking like the prime party in Ekhuruleni and eThekwini, while the DA looks set to take control of Tshwane.
    • Uncertainty still lingers around Johannesburg. While the bigger parties have entered into coalition agreements with smaller parties, things remain volatile, particularly where demands from smaller parties are not being met.
    • Here, the DA not supporting Action SA's bid for mayorship in Joburg, could see the coalition in Tshwane collapse
