Eskom Ramps Up Load-Shedding

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Eskom announced on Sunday that it will run Stage 6 load-shedding until further notice, adding that "this is anticipated to persist through the week," as South Africa is facing an increase in demand during the winter period. Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa.warned that "the worst-case scenario [during winter] is above Stage 6." This comes as a Pretoria court ordered the government to exempt all public hospitals, schools and police stations from load-shedding and ensure uninterrupted supply of electricity to these services, giving Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan 60 days to make it happen.
  • President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to protect Eskom power stations to prevent theft and sabotage from exacerbating the national energy crisis. Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said that around 880 additional troops will be deployed until October 17.
  • South Africa's gross FX reserves shrank a tad to $61.72bn in April from $61.85bn prior, even as consensus expected an expansion to a record high of $62.11bn.
