Eskom Ramps Up Load-Shedding, Johannesburg Elects Mayor

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Eskom announced that it will escalate load-shedding due to the delay in returning nine generating units to service. The utility will implement Stage 6 power rationing this evening, before moving back to Stage 4 tomorrow morning. This comes as the government has called on consumers to reduce their use of electricity during peak demand periods, that is from 17:00 to 21:00, which would alleviate some pressure on the grid. Meanwhile, Eskom told Business Day that it has already spent ZAR1.2bn for diesel since April 1 but is yet to finalise its diesel budget for this financial year.
  • The City of Johannesburg will elect its third Executive Mayor in just three years during an extraordinary Council meeting today. Former Mayor Thapelo Ahmad stepped down ahead of a no confidence vote against him. The Democratic Alliance has nominated its caucus leader Mpho Phalatse, who was ousted by the Council in January and replaced by Ahmad.
  • South Africa returns from a long weekend after observing the Workers' Day on Monday. The data calendar is headlined by April Absa Manufacturing PMI, coming up at 10:00BST/11:00SAST.
