Eskom Saga Continues, Yellen To Visit S. Africa

  • Several civil society groups have filed court papers against the electricity-tariff hike approved by South Africa's energy regulator, arguing that the move is unfair during a period of continuous blackouts. Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa suggested that "there is no way at all in SA we can go and shut down the coal-fired power stations," despite the ongoing turn towards renewables.
  • U.S. Treasury said that Secretary Janet Yellen will meet South Africa's President Ramaphosa on January 25. She will visit South Africa a day after the country hosted Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, with his local counterpart Naledi Pandor refusing to reaffirm her call on Moscow from a year ago to withdraw its troops from Ukraine.
  • South Africa's Leading Indicator was little changed at 123.1 in November versus 123.0 recorded in the previous month, according to the latest data from the SARB.
