Eskom Warns of Stage 6 Load-Shedding

  • On the future energy make-up in South Africa, BusinessDay reports that Eskom has no plans to invest in new generation capacity, letting the private sector invest in new power developments instead. Nonetheless, Eskom does have modest plans to expand its portfolio of renewables. According to the CEO this morning, Eskom sees a very real risk of implementing stage 6 power cuts by 5pm local time today.
  • To deal with labour disputes, Eskom have put into place plans to break the deadlock in wage talks with striking workers. Despite this, unions have appealed to the public enterprises minister Gordhan to intervene – a move which usually works in union’s favour, according to News24.
  • Elsewhere, City Power in Johannesburg have warned that stage 4 loadshedding is putting their systems under too much pressure, and is leading to outages and prolonged breakdowns at certain units. The utility is now receiving over 3,000 complaints per day due to intermittent service.
  • Management at the Impala Platinum mine are to sign a five year deal with the AMCU today, with he changes effective from July onwards.
  • Jobs data in the form of nonfarm payrolls for Q1 are due Tuesday as well as the quarterly SARB bulletin and the sale of 2032, 2037 and 2044 bonds.
