EU And Iranian Nuclear Negotiators To Meet In Doha

SECURITY

Foreign policy journalist Stephanie Liechtenstein, a key reporter covering Iran's nuclear porgramme, has reported that European Union nuclear negotiator, Enrique Mora, will meet Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Bagheri Kani in Qatar this evening for two-days of talks.

  • Liechtenstein: "I understand that talks are focused mainly on Iran's military support to Russia's war against Ukraine as well as on the nuclear file and detainees... I am told the meeting is another attempt to help ease tensions.
  • "The 2 officials have developed a good rapport in the course of the Vienna talks and have kept channels open... since negotiations to revive the JCPOA broke off last September. Mora is also holding bilateral consultations with Qatari senior officials on other issues."
  • The meeting will be the first significant talks between participants of 2015 JCPOA nuclear accord since a flurry of reporting last week suggesting that Iran and the US may be on the brink of an interim deal to curb Iran's nuclear programme.
  • Markets interest remains focused on any sanction relief offered to Tehran which may provide a timeframe for the return of Iranian oil to markets.
