EU-China Summit Concludes: Presser Shortly

EU

The summit between leaders of China and the EU has concluded, taking one hour. A presser from Euro Council President Charles Michel and Euro Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is due to take place shortly.

  • A livestream of the presser can be followed here: https://audiovisual.ec.europa.eu/en/ebs/live/1
  • During the one hour summit Chinese state media released a number of readouts as part of an apparent Chinese strategy to control the media narrative. A similar strategy was used during a recent virtual meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden.
  • Chinese readout: 'China hopes that Europe would formulate an autonomous understanding of China, uphold an autonomous China policy, and jointly advance a stable, long-lasting China-EU relations.'
  • WaPo's Emily Rauhala: 'I guess the bet is that news orgs will run with these headlines, amplifying [China's] talking points until the E.U. side hosts a presser.'
  • It is understood that EU leaders used the summit, the first such summit since 2020, to issue a stern warning against China providing economic or military support to Russia.
