EU Commission Expected To Unfreeze Poland's Share Of Post-Covid & Cohesion Policy Funds

POLAND
  • European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is expected to announce the unblocking of EU funds earmarked for Poland today. RMF FM reports that this will apply to both EUR60bn in post-Covid recovery funds and EUR76bn in cohesion policy funds (EUR136bn in total). The radio station suggests that Poland's request for the first tranche of funding (EUR6.3bn) will be formally approved by the Commission next week, with the body set to issue a positive assessment of measures to address rule-of-law concerns.
  • Prime Minister Donald Tusk said there was no need to meet with Ukrainian President Zelensky to defuse tensions over grain shipments but the cabinets of the two countries will hold a summit in Warsaw on February 28. He also outlined a raft of measures to secure the flow of humanitarian and military aid to Ukraine despite ongoing farmers' protests.
  • President Andrzej Duda said that he does not see any grounds for bringing NBP Governor Adam Glapinski to the Tribunal of State and that "any such action undermines Poland's credibility abroad."
  • Statistics Poland will release unemployment data for January/Q4 at 09:00GMT/10:00CET.
