EU Council Discussion On Ukraine Underway Following Oil Ban Stalemate

The European Council has reconvened for a round of discussions on Ukraine.

  • Laurence Norman of WSJ citing an EU Council source : 'Discussion has now started on Ukraine with all 27.'
  • European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen earlier confirmed that the council had failed to reach consensus on a sixth package of sanctions against Russia.
  • Netherlands Prime Minister said in doorstep comments: 'We understand that some countries are more dependent on Russian oil and that it takes time to rebuild your refineries. The issue here is to maintain the level playing field. The great thing is, this is solvable.'
  • Bloomberg reported a short time ago: 'Russian crude exports still flow as the EU seeks a sanctions deal.'
  • Bloomberg: 'Overall crude shipments edged higher in the seven days to May 27, largely shrugging off mid-month EU restrictions that trading houses see as prohibiting them from dealing with Russian state energy companies.'
