EU Diplo: Quite Confident There'll Be Agreement To Revive Nuclear Deal

In a short statement following the fourth round of talks on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA, the Iran nuclear deal) in Vienna Enrique Mora, Political Director of the European External Action Service, said that he was 'quite confident' that there will be an agreement to revive the Iran nuclear deal.

  • Talks will reconvene next week. Says the fourth round has been the most productive of talks so far, but that there is still more work to be done to reach an agreement.
  • IAEA and Iran at a deal on extending the former's ability to monitory Iran's nuclear facilities. The current 3 month extension to the Additional Protocol expires in the coming days.
  • We note that despite this upbeat rhetoric, there is a ticking clock on a deal being reached, with Iran holding its presidential election on 18 June. A win for a hardline conservative candidate could scupper any revival of the JCPoA.
