EU Gas-fired Generation Requirement Should  Reduce Next Year: Rystad

NATURAL GAS

Rystad Energy expects gas-fired generation will be required in Europe this winter, despite the high cost of gas but the return of nuclear generation plants and more renewable energy capacity should gradually reduce the need for gas-fired power next year.

  • More than 50GW of new solar and wind capacity are planned to be commissioned next year, with EDF hoping to bring back 30GW of nuclear capacity from maintenance.
  • Rystad suggest that money that would have been spent on gas generation could instead be spent on renewable generation. By 2028 new renewable generation capacity would be enough to generate 663 TWh of electricity and would be more than 2,000TWh by 2025. This is in addition to their based case of 2,385GW of solar PV and wind capacity, and 520GW of utility scale batteries by 2050.
