EU Nations Push Back Against German Gas Tariff

NATGAS

Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia have stepped up pressure on Brussels to push back against Germany over a gas tariff they say goes against European energy security measures.

  • Germany places an extra fee on fuel taken out of its gas storage to try and recoup losses on volumes injected when prices soared following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
  • The Commission has prepared legal action against Germany over the tariff but has not launched any lawsuit yet according to Reuters sources.
  • "Together with the scheduled end of transit of Russian gas via Ukraine by the end of this year, the levy will significantly reduce the security of supply of the whole CEE (Central and Eastern Europe) region," the four countries said.
  • The levy is expected to be discussed on Thursday at a meeting in Brussels.
