EU Refinery Maintenance Update

The latest update on the European refinery maintenance schedule.

  • In Germany, Bayernoil’s Vohburg refinery is undergoing maintenance, which shut two crude units. Works began on 8 October and are scheduled to end on 29 November at unit, Bloomberg reports, while one unit restarted according to WoodMac.
  • Bayernoil restarted a hydrogen plant at the Neustadt refinery that had been offline since 9 October, WoodMac reported on 17 November. The 86kbpd CDU and associated 17kbpd VDU were shut on 29 October. The 40kbpd hydrocracker was shut on 6 October according to WoodMac.
  • Raffenerie Heide’s Klesch Heidi refinery has planned works on the 36kbpd CDU since 12 November until 3 January according to Bloomberg.
  • The PCK Schwedt had an elevated flaring at the refinery on 20 November. The 22kbpd VGO hydrotreater remained shut since 15 November, WoodMac reported.
  • The MiRo Karlsruhe saw increased activity at the 86kbpd FCC on 22 November, but output remained below normal. The unit was shut for maintenance since 11 October according to WoodMac.
  • In Scotland, the Grangemouth crude oil refinery is scheduled to close in Spring 2025 according to STV.
  • In Belgium, TotalEnergies is looking at postponing planned work on a gasoline producing unit next year at its Antwerp refinery according to Bloomberg sources. The unit is currently undergoing unplanned maintenance. The larger of the two FCCs - offline since August following a fault - is scheduled to have a new reactor installed in October 2024 but that is possibly now moved to 2025 the source said. Another source told Bloomberg that TotalEnergies Antwerp is planning two major rounds of work in 2025 and 2026 involving most operating units.
  • Exxon Mobil’s Antwerp refinery stopped a crude unit in an unplanned outage on 22 November due to a power outage. The unit is estimated to return on 28 November according to Bloomberg. Nordpool reported the fault at 9:30am on 22 November and estimated that the unit will return on 26 November.
  • In the Netherlands, a fire occurred in the gas turbine at BP’s Rotterdam refinery on 6 November, according to emergency services. The have been no further updates on how the fire affected output. The VDU at BP’s Rotterdam refinery remains halted since 11 April, the small hit on crude runs is estimated at 38kbpd according to Bloomberg.
  • Total’s Zeeland refinery shut the 59kbpd VDU on 20 November according to WoodMac.
  • In Portugal, Galp’s 220kbpd Sines refinery is scheduled to halt until 24 Nov according to Bloomberg.
  • In Spain, BP’s Castellon de la Plana refinery is scheduled to fully halt its output of 110kbpd on 15 October until 8 December. The halt is carried out every six years according to Bloomberg.
  • In Hungary, Mol’s Szazhalmbatta refinery has ongoing planned works at the 70kbpd CDU until 15 December according to Bloomberg. Works started on 6 November.
  • Mol’s Duna refinery shut down the 72kbpd CDU on 5 November. Increased activity was observed on 21 November.
