EU to import record volumes of Russian LNG in 2023: FT

LNG

The EU is set to import record volumes of Russian LNG in 2023, despite attempts to reduce its dependence on Russian energy, according to the Financial Times.

  • Russian LNG constituted 21.6m mt, or 16%, of total LNG imports into the EU from January-July, second only to the US, according to Kpler data.
  • Belgium and Spain were the second and third largest importers of Russian LNG, behind only China.
  • Most of the Russian LNG is coming from long term contracts from the Yamal LNG joint venture.
  • Importers are likely to continue to import contractual volumes as long as it remains legal to do so. There is currently no EU wide ban on importing Russian LNG.
