EU Will Use 'All Avaliable Measures' On UK If NI Protocol Disapplied

EU-UK

In a statement released by the European Commission earlier today the bloc threatened the use of 'all avaliable measures' towards the UK if it unilaterally disapplies the Northern Ireland protocol.

  • This follows the announcement by UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss that the UK gov't would bring forward legislation to disapply sections of the Northern Ireland protocol if changes were not made.

  • EU raised a number of concerns with UK stance, one being "because the Withdrawal Agreement and its Protocol are the necessary foundation for the Trade and Cooperation Agreement, which the EU and the UK have agreed upon to organise their overall relationship after the UK's withdrawal." This could be seen as a signal that the EU will argue that the protocol is essential for the operation of the TCA, the FTA agreed betweent the two sides that has, so far, held off the imposition of any barriers to trade.
  • Statement adds: "Should the UK decide to move ahead with a bill disapplying constitutive elements of the Protocol as announced today by the UK government, the EU will need to respond with all measures at its disposal."
