Europe Aims to Keep Gas Flowing via Ukraine Pipeline

Europe is engaged in “intense” work to keep gas flowing through a key Russia-Ukraine pipeline according to German economy minister Robert Habeck.

  • Europe is aiming for a solution that allows gas flows to continue to southeast Europe without financially supporting the Kremlin.
  • The agreement that covers the transit agreement of Russian gas via Ukraine to southeast Europe is due to expire at the end of the year.
  • “The Ukrainians don’t need these gas supplies,” Habeck said, “but not all European states have managed to become as independent from Russian gas as we are.”
  • Ukraine’s largest energy company — state-run Naftogaz — has ruled out any plan that involves working with Gazprom.
  • One proposed solution involves Azerbaijani gas transit via Ukraine through the existing Russian pipelines that run to Europe according to a number of recent reports.
