NATURAL GAS

European natural gas consumption has declined by 20% since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, mainly driven by Germany Italy and the UK, with the region’s LNG demand to peak in 2025 according to the Institutre for Energy Economic and Financial Analysis (IEEFA).

  • IEEFA assumes that European LNG demand will peak in 2025 amid further deployment of solar and wind, the switch from gas boilers to heat pumps for home heating and added efficiency measures.
  • Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Russian LNG imports to Europe increased. Russian LNG supply to Europe rose by 11% between 2021 and 2023.
  • Shipments to Spain doubled and to Belgium more than tripled during the period, while Turkey and Greece started importing Russian LNG in 2022.
