European Spot LNG Purchases Fell Behind North Asia Last Week

LNG

Northwest Europe and Italy have fallen behind North Asia in terms of total spot LNG imports since the week of 19-25 June amid healthy inventory levels in Europe and peak summer season in North Asia driving up demand according to BloombergNEF estimates.

  • Weekly spot volumes last week into the Japan-South Korea-mainland China-Taiwan region stood at an average of nearly 0.6mn tons in the past four weeks, compared with around 0.4mn tons of spot shipments to northwest Europe and Italy last week, which is 72% below this year’s mean.
  • BNEF expects limited North Asian downstream demand in the coming weeks despite the peak summer season as China’s industrial demand growth remains muted and inventories in South Korea are at elevated levels. This will keep the region’s spot LNG appetite in check over the coming weeks while Europe’s demand for spot shipments may remain as gas inventories are at the top range of the five-year average.
  • Spot deliveries into NWE and Italy have been mostly range bound between 0.4-0.5mn tons since the week starting 12 June, when the region’s weekly spot imports plunged to roughly a three-month low. In contrast, weekly spot volumes absorbed by JKCT have been hovering between 0.5-0.6mn tons.
