Europe’s EPH to Phase Out 1.3GW of Coal by 2025

POWER

European power plant operator Energy and Industry Holding (EPH) will phase out around 1.3GW of coal capacity by 2025, with an additional 1.4GW disconnected by 2030, according to its energy transformation strategy.

  • EPH already closed the 700MW Mehrum coal plant in Germany in March 2024 and is expected to disconnect France’s 600MW Emile Huchet 6 plant in March 2025.
  • The firm will also transfer its German 900MW Schkopau and 31MW Wahlitz lignite plants to its subsidiary EP Energy Transition by the end of 2025. However, these plants are anticipated to be closed by 2034-35, although this could be brought forward by an accelerated German coal exit.
  • Further out, EPH will close its Italian 600MW Fiume Santo coal plant in 2028 – subject to the completion of power interconnection from Sardina to continental Italy.
  • EPH will then convert 800MW of Czech coal heating plants into a mix of hydrogen-ready CCGT, biomass and waste-energy plants by 2028-29.
