Free AccessExit Polls Show Meloni's Coalition Winning Key Regional Votes
Exit polls released following regional elections in Italy's two most populous and economically significant regions, Lombardy and Lazio, show the parties that comprise the centre-right/right-wing coalition of PM Giorgia Meloni set to win majorities in both localities.
- In Lazio, the region encompassing the capital Rome, the centre-right are on course to take power from the centre-left/left-wing coalition involving the centre-left Democratic Party and left-wing populist 5-Star Movement. Independent presidential candidate Francesco Rocca is set to become the first Lazio regional president from the centre-right since 2013. Exit polls put Rocca's coalition winning between 50.5-54.5% of the vote, well ahead of the PD's Alessio d'Amato on 31-35%
- In the centre-right stronghold of Lombardy, incumbent regional president Attilio Fontana from the populist League is on course to win a second term with 49-53% of the vote.
- The results will come as a boost to Meloni's governing coalition, and are likely to cement her right-wing nationalist Brothers of Italy (FdI) party as the most prominent party of the right (in the 2018 Lombardy election the League was the largest party on the right, and in Lazio it was Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right Forza Italia that led the way among the conservative parties).
