Exxon's New CDU at Beaumont May Start Operations this Weekend

REFINING

Exxon Mobil is attempting to start the new crude distillation unit (CDU) at its 369,024 bpd Beaumont, Texas, refinery, according to Reuters sources.

  • First oil could enter the new 250,000-bpd CDU C over the weekend in the initial startup of the unit, which will increase the refinery's capacity by 68% once it is in full operation.
  • Exxon is also repairing a 100,000-bpd vacuum distillation unit (VDU) attached to the 180,000-bpd CDU B at the refinery.
  • CDU C is aiming for full production by late Q1.
  • If production beats its nameplate capacity, it will be the largest refinery in the US.
  • Increased US Gulf refining capacity will serve as a diesel source for Europe over the longer term now that Russian imports are banned.
