F-16 Training For Ukrainian Pilots To Begin in August

NATO

Acting Danish Minister of Defence, Troels Lund Poulsen, has told reporters that a coalition of 11 countries will begin training Ukrainian pilots on advanced F-16 fighter planes in August. According to Reuters, Dutch Defence Minister, Kajsa Ollongren, said the training center will be set up in Romania.

  • Léo Péria-Peigné, at the Institute for International Relations Centre for Security Studies, told Euronews yesterday that the complex training and integration of air defence systems could take as long as four months.
  • Péria-Peigné: "There are often two pilots or even two complete teams per aircraft. You have a pilot on board, between ten and 20 mechanics at least, plus nozzles and ground technicians who take care of the rest."
  • Successful training of Ukrainian pilots is likely to unlock pledges for the delivery of planes but Ukraine may have to wait many months before it receives any stock.
  • A spokeswoman for the Dutch defense ministry said at the end of May: “In the near future, consideration can be given to the possible delivery of F-16s to Ukraine,” adding that the details of the training plan was the priority.
