Facebook To Rule On Whether Trump Can Return To Platform At 0900ET

Political focus this morning on the decision from Facebook's Oversight Board on whether former President Donald Trump will be allowed to return to the platform, after he was banned from most social media outlets in the wake of the 6 January storming of the Capitol by his supporters.

  • The decision is expected at the top of the hour at 0900ET (1400BST, 1500CET).
  • The board will make a binding decision on whether Trump is banned from the platform permanently, and will issue non-binding guidance on how to deal with political leaders' accounts.
  • Should the board, formed of academics, rights activists and lawyers, decide that Trump can return to Facebook it could give further credence to the potential of the former president making a run for the White House again in 2024. A decision to keep him off the social media network would deny him one of his most effective campaigning platforms.
