Falling Global Oil and Gas Exploration in 2022

ENERGY

Global spending on oil and gas exploration is falling this year as the number of licensed blocks and total acreage fall to near all-time lows according to Rystad Energy.

  • Spending on exploration is lower because of the covid pandemic and the following oil market crash.
  • In Jan-Aug this year 21 lease rounds were completed globally compared to 42 in the same period last year. The awarded onshore acreage has fallen to the lowest in 20 years.
  • Government politics have contributed to the fall in spending with a push towards net zero targets.
  • “It is clear that oil and gas companies are unwilling to take on the increased risk associated with new exploration or exploration in environmentally or politically sensitive areas.” said Aatisha Mahajan, vice president of analysis, Rystad Energy.
