Federation Council To Hold Closed-Door Session At Top Of Hour

RUSSIA

Russia's state-owned RIA reporting that according to an unnamed source, the upper chamber of the Russian Federal Assembly - the Federation Council - will hold a meeting behind closed doors at 1800 local time (1000ET, 1500GMT, 1600CET).

  • Comes after both chambers of the Federal Assembly ratified the friendship and aid treaties with the Ukrainian breakaway regions, the so-called Luhansk and Donetsk People's Republics, recognised yesterday by President Vladimir Putin.
  • Unclear what could be discussed in the closed door session, potential for the session to focus on Russian military involvement in the breakaway republics.
  • Comes as Western nations/blocs announce sanction packages. So far, from the UK and EU the packages are unlikely to prove significant enough to encourage Putin to change tack.
