Fico's Condition "Stable But Very Serious," Security Council To Meet At 10:00BST/11:00CEST

SLOVAKIA

Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico is alive and recovering, but his condition remains serious after he sustained several gunshot wounds, Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák told journalists during a press conference in a hospital in Banská Bystrica.

  • This comes after hospital head Miriam Lapuníková confirmed that Fico underwent a five-hour surgery by two teams overnight and has now been transferred from the A&E to intensive care, where he will remain for the time being to receive further treatment. Lapuníková noted that his condition is "stable but very serious."
  • Otherwise, detailed information is few and far between. Polish RMF FM radio reporter heard from a hospital worker that Fico could be airlifted to Bratislava tomorrow, should his condition allow for the move. Some reports suggest that he may have already regained consciousness but these remain unconfirmed.
  • Slovakia's state security council will hold a special meeting at 10:00BST/11:00CEST to discuss the assassination attempt on Fico, with the cabinet also set to meet.
