Fico's Smer Retain Poll Lead As Support For Far-Right Republic Rises

SLOVAKIA

Opinion polling ahead of the 30 September legislative election shows the populist Smer-SD of former PM Robert Fico retaining its lead, remaining on course to win a plurality of seats in the National Assembly. Fico's rise will be of some concern in Brussels, given his shift from broadly pro-EU social democrat to an anti-EU populist in the mold of Hungarian PM Viktor Orban. Moreover, Fico's potential coalition partners will also raise worries of the policy direction of the eurozone member after the election.

  • The ultranationalist far-right Republic have recorded a sustained increase in support and look set to secure at least fourth place should results reflect polling. While former PM Peter Pellegrini - whose Hlas-SD party could emerge as a kingmaker - has said that he will not work alongside Republic in gov't, there remains the prospect of Smer-SD leading a multi-party coalition involving Republic, which sits as a strongly anti-Brussels, Russophile party.
  • Such a gov't could prove more risky to the eurozone than the populist gov'ts of Hungary and Poland, given that both use their own currencies. A eurozone member state with an avowedly anti-EU, pro-Russia policy stance could create difficulties in cohesion and decision making on matters requiring unanimity.
