Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine's Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi said on 28 Aug that, following a multi-day trip to the frontline in the Donbas, fighting around the Pokrovsk area is 'exceptionally tough'. Posting on social media, Syrskyi said that "Fights are exceptionally tough. The enemy throws into battle everything that can move and advance, trying to break through our defenses". Despite Ukraine's ongoing incursion into the Kursk oblast of Russia, to date there has not been a significant reduction in Russian troop numbers on the front in eastern Ukraine, with the Kremlin instead sending new recruits to fight on its own territory.
- With large numbers of experienced troops on the frontline in Donbas this has allowed Russia to continue its steady advance towards the town of Pokrovsk, which sits on strategically-important rail and road links that have been crucial in ferrying troops to and from the front.
- As Forbes reports, "the Kremlin has been willing to trade thousands of lives and hundreds of armored vehicles for a shot at Pokrovsk—and for good reason. [...] In taking Pokrovsk, Russia could weaken Ukrainian defenses all along the eastern front line—a critical precondition for a wider Russian advance that could result in the full occupation of Donetsk Oblast."
