Finance Minister Indicates Foreign Concern With Pension Withdrawals

  • Peruvian finance minister Alex Contreras has stated that foreign investors are concerned about potential future pension withdrawals and the date for new elections, following his trip to the US where he met with around 20 investors. His remarks were taken from a Canal N broadcast. (BBG)
  • “The important thing is that there is a lot of confidence in the Peruvian economy and its restart,” Contreras said. “There is significant demand for Peruvian bonds”.
  • Bond investors are concerned that potential future withdrawals from Peru’s private pension system could further decrease the liquidity of Peruvian debt instruments.
  • Social unrest is moderating and represented a “stress test” for Peruvian democracy, Contreras said, highlighting that the election timeline remains in the hands of congress.
