Finland’s Fingrid Locates Five Offshore Areas to Connect to the Main Grid

Finnish TSO Fingrid has preliminarily identified five areas across west coast Finland to connect offshore wind farms to the main grid by the 2030’s, the TSO said today.

  • The identified areas are Ulvila, Narpio, Vaasa, Raahe, and Raisio.
  • The TSO has also identified the Inko area if offshore wind is feasible in southern sea areas.
  • Fingrid has received inquiries regarding connections for up to 95GW of offshore wind power.
  • Finland’s installed offshore wind capacity is expected to reach 6.5GW by the end of the 2030s – equalling 30TWh of annual production.
  • Additional investments of around €0.6 billion are needed to connect the offshore wind projects – beyond the €4bn investment programme described in Fingrid’s main grid development plan in 2023.
