FinMin Says Blackouts & Logistical Problems Undermine S. Africa's Fiscal Position

  • Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said that the rolling blackouts and inefficiencies at Transnet's operations have undermined efforts to engineer economic growth this year. The official told the Daily Maverick that "there have been a number of changes since we presented the Budget [in February] and all those changes are beginning to impact negatively on the fiscal framework." The impact of these changes will be reflected in Godongwana's Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement, which will be delivered on October 25.
  • Eskom announced that "due to the loss of 3 generation units last night, loadshedding will be increased to Stage 2 from 05:00 until 16:00 today." Another update will be published this afternoon.
  • South Africa's National Treasury and the South African Revenue Service will brief lawmakers on a number of draft bills this morning.
