First LNG Tanker of the Year to Take Shorter Northern Sea Route

LNG

LNG vessel Fedor Litke looks to be the first tanker of the year to take the Northern Sea Route east through the Arctic to Asia according to ICIS.

  • The journey time is half that of going west around Europe and then back east again but is not open all year with the ice too thick from around January to May/June of each year.
  • China has long-term contracts to take LNG from Russia's Arctic Yamal LNG project and the cargo could be heading to China.
  • Other Yamal cargoes continue to head west to destinations including France and Spain, where companies including TotalEnergies and Naturgy have long-term contracts.
