  • This finding significantly reduces pressure on the first minister, who would have been under heavy pressure to resign after 7 years in office if she was found to have broken the ministerial code.
  • Sturgeon's pro-independence Scottish National Party has seen its polling support drop in recent weeks, hit both by the Salmond scandal, ongoing party infighting, and the successful rollout of the COVId-19 vaccine UK-wide denting the appeal of Scottish independence.
  • With Sturgeon set to remain in office, attention now turns to the 6 May Scottish Parliament elections, where the SNP is attempting to win a majority to boost the prospect of another independence referendum being called.
