Five States Holding Primary Elections Today
Primary day in Idaho, Kentucky, North Carolina, Oregon, and Pennsylvania.
- Themes to watch: The continuing examination of former President Donald Trump, the struggle between the moderate and progressive wings of the Democrat party, and a late lurch to the right from the GOP.
- Politico: “Republican strategists [are concerned] that the party might blow [Pennsylvania] … by nominating far-right election deniers."
Pennsylvania Senate
- Trump endorsed celebrity physician Mehmet Oz is frontrunner but facing a late surge from conservative commentator Kathy Barnette amidst accusations of Islamophobia and ‘election denying.'
- Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman will likely take the Dem race. Fetterman is a 'new progressive' with appeal to both middle class and working-class voters. A Fetterman vs Barnette race has the potential to flip to Democrats - a huge result for Dems.
Pennsylvania Governor
- Trump has endorsed far right state Senator Doug Mastriano. Politico : ‘There are few states as deeply infected as Pennsylvania by Donald Trump’s election fraud lie... Mastriano [has] been subpoenaed by the House select committee investigating the events of that day.’
North Carolina Senate
- Critical open seat that Democrats are targeting in November as a potential flip. Trump has endorsed Rep. Ted Budd (R-NC).
Oregon’s 5th District
- A test of the Democrat progressive wing. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), has endorsed Jamie McLeod-Skinner against moderate Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-OR), endorsed by President Biden.
Idaho Governor
- Trump has endorsed Lt. Gov. Janice McGeachin against incumbent Gov. Brad Little. The two had a tumultuous relationship in the Governor’s mansion. Politico: 'McGeachin is arguably the most extreme candidate Trump has endorsed this year...'
